North Dorset Liberal Democrat Annual General Meeting.
North Dorset Liberal Democrats held their AGM in the Stour Hall in The Exchange in Sturminster Newton on Thursday 25th November. The meeting heard a rousing speech from Vikki Slade followed by questions and answers. Vikki is a Councillor on BCP Council and fought the last three general elections in Mid Dorset and North Poole. She said that a strong Liberal Democrat showing in Dorset Council and in national elections was important. Core Liberal Democrat values are vital in the fight against the increasingly immoderate trend in politics today. She urged people to have the confidence to step up and stand for selection as Lib Dem candidates.
The meeting elected Mike Chapman to be Chair of the constituency party, re-elected Barrie Cooper as honorary president and voted in an Executive team of eight. Addressing the meeting, Mike Chapman said:
“The past year, Covid limitations notwithstanding, has seen North Dorset Liberal Democrats come together more and more as a team. We have created an outline Development Plan that reflects our priorities. A lot of flesh has to be added to those bones and we shall need that spark of electoral excitement and motivation to bring our candidates and targets to life.
We have run projects such as the Community Fridge here in Sturminster Newton. Bought and paid for by Lib Dems, managed and stocked twice a week in a campaign to reduce food waste. Time for this to move on, though. The community in the town is more than capable of taking it forward in 2022. We have a strong focus on climate change and have held a climate change workshop and planted trees with an ambition to do more.
We have cut our teeth on the dark arts of social media, building on the expertise within the team and on a set of consistent themes throughout the year (see ndorsetlibdems on Facebook). We have begun to campaign on the streets again, too. We started with the Police and Crime Commissioner election and have moved on to conducting street surveys to find out what people really think. We have plans for new literature and leaflets as well as electronic media. We took a stand at the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show which reminded a lot of people that we are here and will be a force to be reckoned with.
We have put our heads above the parapet in our local press and are leading on producing articles at least monthly covering Lib Dem activity and viewpoints across the Blackmore Vale and beyond and which are already turning a few heads.
I would like to thank the Exec. team, every one of whom does more than is asked of them and with a commitment and spirit that is fantastic. Above all, I would like to thank everyone who has turned out, delivered a leaflet, got food for the Fridge and has said a kind word on Facebook. Thank you.”
