Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Ed Davey said Britain could be a world leader in clean energy and renewables in a powerful speech to a full auditorium at The Exchange in Sturminster Newton.
Sir Ed, a former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, told the ‘Decarbonising Capital’ event that the Conservatives were wrecking the UK’s climate credentials by blocking the offshore wind sector, cutting solar subsidies, cancelling the Lib Dem’s Zero Carbon Homes initiative and delaying proposed tidal power projects.
However, Sir Ed, who recently lost out to Jo Swinson in the Lib Dem leadership election, said the Conservative damage could be reversed if by a new government.
Sir Ed said that the UK needs to continue focusing on leadership in renewables, not just to cut emissions, but also to reduce energy dependency on Russia and Saudi Arabia, to drive technological innovation and to create jobs. He said all this would be possible inside a united Europe - but as an isolated state, we would be beholden to both Russia’s Putin and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince for our fuel.
He said new Lib Dem environmental policies would be announced in the run-up to the general election and the proposed sliding scale air tax which penalises only the most frequent business travellers and jetsetters was a taste of things to come from the Party. There will be pragmatic and fair liberal policies that will make sense to all voters who are looking to back a party who show consistent moral leadership with their focus on green growth.
The evening was chaired by Sir Ed’s wife, Emily Gasson, the former North Dorset Lib Dem candidate from 2001-2010. It was hosted by David Chadwick, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for North Dorset, who, at 27, is already throwing sparks of energy himself into the upcoming election campaign. Chadwick will be appearing at rallies and campaign events across the county over the next few weeks and pounding the streets of North Dorset to speak with constituents.
